As the current Governor of the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District of Kiwanis, I would like to welcome you to the 2012 – 2013 Kiwanis Year. If you are a current Kiwanian, I call on you to rededicate yourself to serving the Children of the World. If you are not yet a Kiwanian, I encourage you to reach out to the Kiwanis Club nearest you and to join with us in our efforts to make the world a better place.

As our Defining Statement indicates, Kiwanis is a worldwide organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Although a key word in this statement, “volunteer” is only an indication of the monetary compensation that we receive for our efforts. It is, by no means, an indication of the level of commitment that Kiwanians give to their communities. Indeed, through the hundreds of thousands of service hours performed each year, the world is truly a better place because of Kiwanians. During the 2012 – 2013 year, Kiwanians will not only have an opportunity to continue in service through the existing District programs such as the Spastic Paralysis Foundation and the Service Leadership Programs, but we will also have the an opportunity to embrace the world wide service project “ELIMINATE”, in which Kiwanians all over the world are banding together to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. The goal is to raise $110 million by the end of 2015 so that we can celebrate the conquering of this disease in the same year as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis. This effort, the second worldwide service project in the history of Kiwanis, will once again establish Kiwanis as an international force for good in the world.

The Illinois-Eastern Iowa District of Kiwanis has a long history of Kiwanis excellence. Over 7,000 Kiwanians have unselfishly given of themselves wherever and whenever a need has been identified. It will be my responsibility to see that the district continues in this history of excellence. And ideally, we will be successful in challenging and inspiring the district to even higher levels of service and excellence.

First Lady, Alyce, and my theme for the year is Together We Serve. I was inspired to select this saying because of what we as Kiwanians do at the Club level, the Division Level and the District Level. Together We serve the children of the world.

Yours in Service,

John Moreland
2012-13 I-I District Governor
